Religion in America There are an estimated 2 billion people who profess to be Christians in the Western world; and over 1billion people who are of Islamic belief. Religion can be broken down into twelve major classes which are; Buddhism, Christianity, Baha’I, Confucianism, Islam, Taoism, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Shinto and ,Judaism.    

The Western thought has been that there is only one religion “Christianity”. Originally, there were three recognized religions: Judaism, Christianity and paganism. With an ever increasing awareness of history and philosophy the development of other religions were added.

 

Over the years, many scholars have recognized Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism as the most significant religions in the world. Religion is ranked by size and the number of members that are widespread. Religion in America is more than just a classification by which to adhere.

 

Religion in America has become diversified and can’t fully be explained by any one entity. In America religion is broad with sects, divisions and denominations. When one says “religion” in America their is no clear way for one to describe what and how they believe. 

 

Religion can be what one adheres to in their daily routine or the regiment they follow when they exercise. Early history taught that if one used the world “religion” that one was speaking of their moral belief system. In America one can look at a shared doctrine and some common practices. No matter what dimension one looks from there will always be questions.

 

Religion in America can be a way of life which brings cohesiveness to a unified group. Most people practice one form of religion at a time.

From a theological perspective, one must recognize that there are many religious traditions in America that are yet to be explored or explained.

 

Other measurements such as how many churches a faith groups owns, what is their organizational reporting (how many members do they have). Organizational reporting is one of the simplest and most economical methods, however, it is not always reliable.

 

For the purpose of having a working knowledge of what Religion in America is one can also look at census records, polls and surveys.

It should be noted that there is no clear way to define all that Religion is in America. Finally, religion is not only corporate but it is also personal in many ways and can’t be limited to a denomination or sect.
