One of the most famous April Fool’s Day pranks was perpetrated by physicist Mark Boslough. In an effort to poke fun at New Mexico for introducing legislation to teach creationism in schools, Boslough published an article in the April 1998 edition of New Mexicans for Science and Reason. It stated that Alabama was going to legally change the value of Pi to represent the Biblical value. This value was going to be 3.0 rather than the traditional 3.14159 et cetera. The hoax was uncovered by people angrily calling the Alabama state legislature.

In 2008, to celebrate the ten year anniversary of the April Fool’s Day prank, the Microsoft Institute for Advanced Technology in Governments posted information that stated the organization reclaimed the value of Pi from the state of Alabama. To do this, Microsoft was going to make three easy payments of 1.047333 to the state for a total of 3.141999.
