Freelancers have to deal with some career challenges that other people do not have to face. Some of these issues will have to do with your own personal work ethic and the way in which you structure your work. Fortunately, these things really do not have to be all that challenging. This is because there are some ways in which you can overcome any issues that you may be facing in these areas of your business. With this in mind, here are some tips to help you get started:
1.Establish a set schedule for your business. Once you have some working hours in place you will be able to walk away from your work at the end of the day without feeling attached to it. This is especially important if you are going to be working from home since you will soon discover that your clients will try to contact you at any time of the day or night. Not only will this seriously impede the rest of your life but also because you will only want to work whenever you can be most productive and effective.
2.You are going to need to have your own computer. This is important because you will be working with your clients’ sensitive data, which you are not going to want to chance compromising in any manner. Herein also lies the reason why you are going to want to make sure that you install a good anti-virus program that also has anti-malware and anti-spyware capabilities. It is also a good reason for you to spend some time each month backing up your hard drive onto something that you can store separately from your computer. While this may sound like an additional job in and of itself, it is important to take these steps in order to ensure that you do not loose any important material.
3.If you are going to be charging by the hour for the work that you do, then you are going to need a software program that is able to keep track of the amount of time that you are actually working. There are actually numerous programs available today for you to choose from. Once you choose a program you should also decide whether or not you want to deal with fractions of time. If you don’t want to work with them, then you should add in an additional hour every time that you have spent 30 minutes on a project. For instance, if you work 5 ½ hours to complete a project, then you would want to charge for a total of 6 hours worth of work on that project.
