It is testing season in Minnesota. All the children, little and big, will sit down over the next month with their handy #2 pencil and fill in bubbles for somewhere between 6 and 6 hours.

The state given tests are a complicated mess and each year I wonder if the designers have every met children. My favorite addition from a few years back are the RED STICKERS… du du duhuhu… These are applied to the edge of the students’ test booklet in order to seal the section they just completed, thus eliminating the risk that they may go back and improve an answer. If anyone has ever given a sticker to a child they know that there is a direct relationship between the importance of the sticker, the importance of it’s intended destination and the speed at which the child will stick that sticker on something entirely unrelated.
