WEEDS (season 4)The Showtime series Weeds has been running for five seasons, hitting the network as the highest-rated program on the channel in its very first year. The series revolves around Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker), who was a normal suburban housewife living in California…until her husband suddenly died. Nancy, finding herself with very few options, becoming a local drug dealer. Selling marijuana, she manages to make ends meet even as she keeps up her soccer-mom persona and lifestyle.

Hey, it’s a living. Nancy even found herself baking pot brownies and other edible goods in season one when the market started to sag. While Nancy struggles to keep her independent business going, she’s also busy being a mother of two sons. In all aspects of her role, Mary-Louise Parker is divine. She holds the show together with her mixture of businesswoman/mom/regular person/drug dealer, a truly complex formula for any actor.

During its run, Weeds has enjoyed guest appearances from stars like Mary-Kate Olsen and Zooey Deshanel. The show has been renewed for a sixth season, a testament to its popularity on Showtime. And make no mistake, this is definitely a premium cable type of show. Salty language is casually used, sexual and substance abuse experiences are showcased and very real, gritty dialogue could cause some viewers to blush. But at its heart, Weeds is a show about people and how we all do the best with what we’ve got. Though pot-dealing Nancy Botwin is a bit of an unlikely heroine, she is an admirable one nonetheless.
