With the exception of Spongebob, are there really any quality cartoons out there that are kid oriented? I have an eight year old and it seems difficult at times to find tv shows that are appropriate for children. These days there are a lot of pre-teen catered television especially on the Disney channel.

I hope this article doesn’t come across in a way that people think all I do is plop my kid in front of the TV all day long. Absolutely not true. I’d much rather us be out together riding bikes and doing arts and crafts besides watching TV. We do all of these things but there are times when she finished with her homework and I need to make dinner. I’d rather her watch a good television show instead of playing outside by herself where I can’t see her.

Let’s get into the Disney channel first. Hannah Montana is a great show for young kids. There’s singing and dancing and there always seems to be a lesson learned at the end. I also like how the whole family is involved in the show and there is parenting. Then there are shows that I despise like Zoey 101. I despise it because there is little to zero parent interaction, the kids seem to always been getting into trouble and the main character got pregnant in real life at 16. Not only that they are always going to parties, to the beach etc. unsupervised. I think the episodes I watched they were supposed to be in 8th grade. How did they get to the beach or to these parties?

There is another show that I like but don’t let my daughter watch. That show is Drake and Josh. I think both characters are very charming but they are a little on the older side for 8 year olds. They are both supposed to be 16 year olds in this show I believe. Josh’s father married Drake’s mother so they instantly became step-brothers. They are boys being boys and getting into trouble all the time, having house parties etc. You get the idea and it seems innocent for kids that are a little bit older.

Watch out for the Fox Family channel. I recorded a show that my daughter wanted to watch called Picture This with Ashley Tisdale from High School Musical. She was at her dad’s house so I decided to watch it first to see if it was appropriate for her. In my opinion it was not. There were at least 4 instances of foul language including “Ass” being one of the words used by the girls. I couldn’t believe this was Fox Family?? Tisdale plays a geeky high schooler who has a crush of course on the school heartthrob. Mandy gets grounded for disobeying her father so what does she do? Sneak out and go to a party of course! This movie should have easily been PG-13 but what do I know. Make sure to recognize before the movie starts IF they show you a rating. Just because it says it’s on Fox Family doesn’t mean it’s appropriate for your young child.
