In an attempt to revamp their image and how us hungry consumers view their foods, Healthy Choice has come up with a wide array of new products, flavors, and even spokeswoman!  Of course having the iconic funny woman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (AKA Elaine) playfully promoting the delicious new entrees, was a wise move for the freezer aisle giant.  But even the best campaign will fall short if the products don’t make the cut.

With their stiffest competition coming in the way of Smart Ones and Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice picked an excellent time to roll out some new dishes.  With seemingly almost all of America on one diet or another, the market is definitely up for the taking.  What Healthy Choice was hoping to do to get an edge over the competition is to appeal to the taste buds of the hungry (and sometimes deprived feeling) dieters.

Okay, so how do all those new entrees, hyped by Healthy Choice to be tantalizing and ‘Not Diet Food’, actually stack up?  Well, firstly, the nice thing is the variety in which Healthy Choice has spanned.  Not only do they offer a plethora of frozen varieties, but they now have soups, breads, non-frozen entrees, and even ice creams, thus not confining you to solely the freezer.  It seems there is something for everyone and every taste.  While the calorie counts for many of their entrees are a bit higher than their Smart Ones and Lean Cuisine counterparts, one highlight is definitely the Fire Roasted Tomato Chicken.  With 320 calories and only 5 grams of fat, the chicken is tender, sauce is creamy, and even comes with a tasty apple-cranberry dessert.  The exciting new Asian inspired line is also a must try; both the Sweet Sesame Chicken and Five-Spice Beef and Vegetables giving you the flare you’re looking for without skimping on the meat.  Sadly, however, no fortune cookie is included.

As for all the other goodies; the Tomato Basil and Mozzarella Panini is probably my favorite of all and actually comes out crisp from the microwave, without getting soggy, and they can be eaten either sandwiched, or open-faced to feel more like pizza.  I’d actually say the paninis are tastier than the Healthy Choice frozen pizza options; and most of those are served on french bread anyway.  Now, as for those new Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers, they are really easy to prepare, pretty much the same as the Cafe Steamers line, but are convenient if you are on the go and don’t have a freezer to store them in.  Many of them aren’t anything to write home about, but if you’re looking to stick to a portion controlled and diet-friendly lunch either at work or out, they are a good choice.  The Southwestern Style Chicken has a nice kick and is probably the best of the bunch.

The ice creams are decent, but do taste like the fat has been sucked out of them; making Healthy Choice not my first choice for low-fat frozen treats.  Sorry, Healthy Choice, but you don’t wow us there; luckily they do make up for it with their staple meals.  Plus, their soups are excellent, there are ones that come in the ready to heat little bowls to make prep easier, and the lower sodium makes them all the better for you.  So, all in all, I’d say the newly remodeled and face-lifted Healthy Choice is for the better.  Being that I’m not a chef by any means, and often pinched for time, it’s nice to have more in the ways of healthy but still yummy lunch and dinner options.
