picasso painting…according to Jonathon Richman of 1970’s rock band “The Modern Lovers”, because of Picasso’s apparent powers of persuasion with the ladies, he “was never called an asshole”?

…that Picasso was known to have worn pants with one leg blue and the other red?

…that he exchanged his father’s surname “Ruiz” for his mother’s “Picasso,” claiming to prefer its “double s’s”: like Rousseau, Poussin, and Matisse….?

…that he was a Communist?

…had many mistresses and one committed suicide over him after his death? (would she have said he wasn’t an asshole?)

…that he was 91 at the time of his death in 1973? And his final words were “drink to me, drink to my health, you know I can’t drink anymore”?

Did you know that Picasso’s “Boy with a Pipe (The Young Apprentice)” was bought in 2004 for 104.1 million – the highest amount ever paid for a painting? (painting attached)

Had a habit of painting only at night, saying once, “There must be darkness everywhere except on the canvas, so that the painter becomes hypnotized by his own work and paints almost as though he were in a trance. He must stay as close as possible to this own inner world if he wants to transcend the limitations his reason is always trying to impose on him.”

Did you know that Pablo Ruiz Picasso was a hoarder, saving every scrap of anything that struck him?

That after the mid-1950’s the pressures of fame drove him into a seclusion that lasted until his death?

And finally, this writer poses a question: considering Richman wrote his Picasso song in 1972 and the artist died in 1973, is it possible therein lies some kind of a connection? Just a thought….
