This is an absolutely wonderful place to paddle! Lake Wissota has very few houses surrounding the lake, so it’s perfect for nature and bird watching! There are two main sections to the lake. A smaller, calmer section which is perfect for recreational kayaking, and a much larger section that can be very challenging if it is windy. It also connects with two rivers – the Flambeau River, and the Chippewa River.
The first day of my paddle, I went out on the larger section of the lake. I was engaged in swells up to 2 1/2 feet when I reached the center of the lake. I recommend you stick to the smaller section unless you have a touring kayak! Luckily, I brought my Riot Brittany touring kayak, as well as my Azul Krypton recreational kayak.
The second day of the paddle, I went to the smaller section of the lake. I paddled my Azul Krypton this time, and the water was beautiful! It got quite shallow at times, sometimes as shallow as 3 feet deep. There were some pretty nice bass in some areas of the lake. Unfortunately, I didn’t think to bring any fishing gear with me, otherwise I’m certain I would have caught a trophy fish!
The campground was very nice, and the bathrooms were the cleanest I’ve seen at any campground. I would defiantly recommend Lake Wissota for either a recreational or touring kayak trip!
