Viewing angle is the angle at which the tv display is viewed, with respect to the axis of the television screen. At oblique angles, the contrast is affected, as colors fade, in that way changing the television brightness. As a result, pictures would seem washed out. On the other hand, plasma HDTVs provide superior viewing angles, in comparison with LCDs (Liquid Crystal Displays), which are still in the process of improvement. In LCDs, a directional backlight lights up every pixel, and the very best intensity is obtained while viewing from the zero degree direction, i.e., a perpendicular position. Moving away from the axis diminishes the backlight that reaches the eye, dropping the contrast level at oblique angles. Diffuse-scattering on the screen contributes with a reduction of directional backlight. Surrounding lighting as well impacts viewing, as a dark environment causes the iris to open more widely to allow additional light. Light from the edges will cause scattering, causing less picture correctness on the retina, but a bright screen offers good picture qualiy. An average lighting should be such that the eye is able to adjust easily when looking away from the screen in direction of another object. For that reason, lighting variations should not be large, in order to eliminate stress on the eye.
Before the appearance of flat screen TVs, a great idea was to put a light at the back the Television set. At present, fluorescent bulbs and LEDs are used around the image’s edge to throw a smooth light in the wall behind the set, in that way reducing the brightness difference between the surroundings and the picture. A light on the viewer’s side would mirrorfrom the tv, causing destruction. Therefore, light should not fall on the viewers or on the television. A small light can be used to light up either the floor or the ceiling, such that nothing is reflected back to the viewer.
Viewing distances and screen dimensions are not dealt with rightly in many living rooms. The tv size determines the amount of work for the eye, and though the eye can control its focus on the television, it can not control the brightness adjustment. Bearing in mind the visual field, while the image occupies the central area, the eye is not distracted by surrounding objects, and easily adjusts to the picture’s brightness.
An ideal viewing distance would be two times the screen width, as it would guarantee that the picture occupies the central field of the eye’s vision, enabling better focus. Therefore, when the display is sufficiently large, it is advisable to watch TV in the dark, but for smaller displays, ambient lighting is essential. Optimum light, coupled with a good viewing angle, would certainly render a positive watching experience.
