Episode Summary: In the season premiere, the eighteen castaways arrive in Nicaragua and learn about an ironic twist when voting someone out.

The rules of this game are simple: sixteen average Americans (eighteen in seasons 8 and 9, and 20 in season 10, and eighteen in season 11) are abandoned in the middle of some of the most unforgiving places on earth. They are divided into teams. Every three days, the Survivors must gather to vote someone out of their tribe. Once a total of six people have been voted out, the two tribes merge (this may vary season to season).After the merge, every person must compete for him/herself at both reward and immunity challenges. Only one person can win these challenges. Once a person receives immunity, that person can not have any votes against him/her for that tribal council. The next person to be voted out just after the merge will not return to the following tribal council. The next seven people return to be on a jury – they vote at the very last tribal council for who will win.

Francesca forged an alliance with Kristina and Phillip to get rid of Rob, but when Phillip spilled the beans about the plan, Francesca found herself on the chopping block.

Wow, that was quite unexpected. Just by looking at the Confessional Count (essentially screen time) of each of the Survivors, I was surprised to see that Rob and Russell didn’t hog all the air time. As a result, we got to meet some eccentric personalities. The clear stand outs of the episodes were Francesca – whose commentary ended up being entertaining so we hope she can survive on Redemption Island. It has also been awhile since we’ve seen such an aggressive female from the onset of the game, so Kristina is a breath of fresh air for the season. Those Idols, whatever happened to making them difficult to find. And who walks around with a shovel without getting noticed? And then we have Phillip, who wants to make every attempt to let you know he is a former FBI agent. Next week, he seems to trek even closer to looneyville when he rejoices in killing a tiny crab with a rock.

It’s pretty clear after seeing Episode 1 that Rob has a distinct advantage and greater outlook in surviving in the game over Russell. There has been a lot of Russell hate from his tribe so we’ll see if he can really do anything about changing his fate. I don’t see his alliance with Stephanie going anywhere.

The immunity challenge, while grand, wasn’t as epic as I would have hoped for. But it is reassuring that we’ll be seeing more physical challenges this season now that there aren’t too many older people playing the game.

Sadly, the ratings of the show didn’t reflect how the general public felt about this season as it plummeted vs. the premiere episode of Nicaragua (yes, American Idol probably has something to do with it). Could the gimmick of bringing back Rob and Russell coupled with Redemption Island be the reason viewers are taking a leave of absence this season? Even so, as an avid fan, I’m curious to see how this Redemption Island twist will play out and if it has any effect on how the game is played.
